Components of Printable Carbonless Paper

CB (coated back) sheet

This is the top sheet of carbonless copy paper. It contains microcapsules of colorless dye precursors. When pressure is applied, these microcapsules rupture, releasing the dye precursors.

CFB (coated front and back) sheet

This sheet is sandwiched between the CB and CF sheets, if present. It contains microcapsules of color developers. When pressure is applied, the color developers react with the dye precursors, creating a visible color change.

CF (coated front) sheet

This is the bottom sheet of carbonless copy paper. It has a clay coating that acts as a receptor for the transferred dye. The clay coating captures the color created by the reaction between the dye precursors and color developers.

Q: How does printable carbonless paper work?

A: Each sheet of carbonless paper is coated with special ink capsules designed to enable with a microcircuit board and give access to self-contained ink capsules activated when pressure is applied. Each layer is treated with chemicals meant to react to pressure. Carbonless paper is unique because the top layer has clay with a basic substance, while lower layers contain microcapsules full of dye. This allows NCR paper printing to generate multiple copies of forms or documents in one step without the need for carbon paper.

Q: What makes printable carbonless paper different from regular printable paper?

A: Unlike a standard paper that only keeps ink on its surface, carbonless paper comes with an ink evaporating coating. This coating comprises microencapsulated inks or dyes and a reactive clay, which gives the paper the capability of being able to copy itself under pressure.
