Components of Carbonless Paper

CB (Coated Back)

This is the top sheet, coated on the back with microcapsules containing colorless dye.

CFB (Coated Front and Back)

This is the middle sheet, coated with microcapsules on the back and color-developing agents on the front.

CF (Coated Front)

This is the bottom sheet, coated on the front with a color-developer, typically clay or resin.

Advantages of Carbonless Paper

NCR Copy Paper
  • Cleaner Process

Contrary to old-fashioned carbon paper, carbonless paper does not leave behind any smudges or stains. It's much cleaner.

  • Environmentally Friendly

Carbonless paper does not result in any waste generation, as carbon sheets that need to be used separately are thus thrown away once used.

  • Cost-Effective

Having had carbon copy paper in demand earlier, carbonless paper provides a cost-effective solution by eradicating the chore of making multiple copies.

  • Convenience

The process of creating duplicates with carbonless paper is quick and more convenient; therefore, it is very effective in fast-moving environments like retail, logistics, and hospitality.

Uses of Carbonless Paper

Invoicing: Carbonless paper is commonly used for creating duplicate invoices. It allows businesses to keep a copy of the invoice for their records while providing a copy to the customer.

Receipts: Restaurants, retail stores, and service providers use carbonless paper for generating duplicate receipts. It ensures accurate record-keeping and provides a copy for customers.

Work Orders: Carbonless paper is ideal for creating work orders, especially in industries such as automotive repair, construction, and maintenance. It allows for efficient documentation and tracking of work processes.

Delivery Slips: With carbonless paper, delivery companies can create duplicate copies of delivery slips. This helps in maintaining accurate records and providing proof of delivery.

Contracts and agreements

Carbonless paper is useful for generating duplicate copies of contracts and agreements. It allows all parties involved to have a copy of the signed document.

Medical forms

Carbonless paper finds application in medical settings for creating duplicate copies of forms such as patient questionnaires, consent forms, and medical records.

Sales orders

Carbonless paper is widely used for sales order forms. By creating duplicate copies, businesses can keep track of orders and provide a copy to the customer.

The Difference Between Carbonless Paper and Thermal Receipt Paper

Here are some important differences between thermal receipt paper and carbonless paper:

Printer

Thermal papers can only be used with thermal printers, while carbonless papers are usually compatible with Impact Printers.

01

Coating

Thermal papers usually come with a protective coating to prevent thermal image fading. The carbonless paper has two chemicals (Coated Front and Coated Back) stored in small capsules. These chemicals get released when there is pressure from a pen or printer applied.

02

Ribbons

The first page of carbonless paper has a high-quality print due to the use of a traditional printing ribbon, and the pressure applied on the first sheet causes an image to appear on the subsequent pages. There is no requirement for a ribbon in thermal paper.

03

Paper Surface Color

Carbonless paper has three different surface color options: white, pink, and canary. In contrast, only a white option is available for thermal paper.

04

Print-Out Image Color

In thermal paper, the print-out image color is black. However, in carbonless paper, it can be blue or black, depending on the ribbon’s color.

05

Carbonless Paper Production Process

The production of carbonless paper mainly includes the following steps:

Base Paper Preparation

High-quality paper is selected as the base material.

Coating Application

The back of the top sheet is coated with dye-containing microcapsules, while the front of the middle and bottom sheets is coated with a developer.

Drying Process

The coatings are cured using drying equipment.

Cutting and Packaging

Large rolls of paper are cut into the required sizes and packaged.

Tips for Using the Carbonless Paper

Take a look at a few of the most important and useful tips that you can follow to get the best results using carbonless paper:

You should be careful while keeping the carbonless papers in the exact order and not flip them over.

The chemical coatings – CB, CFB, and CF, are arranged in a specific order. Therefore, you should ensure that they stay in the appropriate order to transfer the image properly.

The 2-part carbonless paper comes with a coated back top sheet that meets the coated front bottom sheet. Therefore, when the pressure is applied on the paper surface, both the coatings work to create the image on the coated front.

Whereas, the 3,4, 5, or 6 part set should have CFB sheets in between CB top sheet and coated front bottom sheet to fill the set with the required number of sheets.

FAQ

Q: What is carbonless paper?

A: Carbonless paper allows for making multiple copies with low pressure. It has two types of chemicals, Coated Front (CF) and Coated Back (CB), that are stored in tiny capsules. When you apply pressure from a pen or printer, the capsules release the chemicals.

Q: What is the difference between carbonless paper and carbon paper?

A: The main difference between carbonless paper and carbon paper is the mechanism used to create copies. Carbon paper requires a layer of carbon to be placed between two sheets of paper. When pressure is applied, the carbon transfers onto the bottom sheet, creating a copy.
In contrast, carbonless copy paper uses a chemical reaction between dye precursors and color developers to create copies. It eliminates the need for a separate carbon layer and provides a cleaner and more efficient method of duplication.

Q: How is NCR paper related to carbonless paper?

A: NCR paper, or “no carbon required” paper, is another term used to refer to carbonless paper. Both NCR paper and carbonless paper are synonymous and describe the same type of paper. The term “NCR” highlights the fact that these papers do not require the use of carbon paper for duplication.
NCR paper is widely used in various industries and applications, offering a convenient and efficient way to create duplicate copies of documents. It provides the same benefits and functionalities as carbonless copy paper.

Q: How does carbonless paper work without carbon paper?

A: When pressure is applied, microcapsules on the CB sheet release colorless dye precursors that react with color developers on the CFB sheet, transferring a visible color change onto the CF sheet.

Q: How many copies can carbonless paper generate at once?

A: Typically 2 to 5 copies, depending on the ply and pressure used.

Q: Is carbonless paper recyclable?

A: Yes, but sheets with phenolic coatings should be handled according to local environmental regulations.

Q: Can carbonless paper be printed using laser printers?

A: Most carbonless papers are designed for dot matrix or impact printers. Laser printing may damage the coating unless specially formulated.

Q: The difference between traditional carbonless paper and carbonless laser paper?

A: The most important difference between traditional carbonless paper and carbonless laser paper is that traditional carbonless paper is manufactured with solvent-based chemicals that can damage critical printer components, including rollers, drums and other printer components.
Carbonless laser paper is designed specifically for use in laser printers and digital copiers. Since its imaging capsules are not solvent based, they cause no damage to the components of the printer.
